THE HISTORY

After years of owning and accumulating an impressive group of top level reined cow horses, Laure Woods and her daughter Lexi Kastanis founded the Red Arrow Ranch in Hollister, California in 2020.

Laure Woods grew up riding horses along side and under the guidance of her father. Her dad rode saddle horses and jumpers from the time he was a young boy in New York. By sharing his knowledge and expertise, he instilled a love and passion for horses in Laure and her brother and prepared them for more advanced and formal riding programs.

In 1996, she bought her family’s Portola Valley, California home and built a small boarding stable. Laure enjoyed watching her daughters grow up riding and caring for horses with their friends in Pony Club and beyond. To this day, she spends her free time in the saddle and calls herself a hybrid because she now rides English and Western. While Laure continues to develop her skills in the cow horse arena, she also thoroughly enjoys trail riding on their retired horses.

Laure attended college at UC Davis, majoring in animal science with an emphasis in horse health and breeding. She also helped found and rode in the Mustang Drill Team in the early ‘80s. After graduating UC Davis, she spent six months doing foal watch in Coalinga, California at Harris Farms Horse Division where they breed and train thoroughbred racehorses. She assisted in foaling and herd health for foals and client mares.

Laure’s time at UC Davis and Harris Farms inspired her dream to have a breeding program. Laure’s passion for breeding, combined with Lexi’s love and passion for reined cow horses, led them to fulfill a dream through their breeding program in the world of western performance horses.

Laure learns more every day about the western industry and the wonderful people involved in every facet. She feels it is a caring, inclusive industry and appreciates what a close knit community it is. She is pleased and proud to be a part of it and that Red Arrow Ranch is contributing towards those ethics and practices in programs shared by the National Reined Cow Horse Association, the California Reined Cow Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association and other affiliated programs.

Lexi Kastanis has grown up riding horses her whole life. In her younger years, she rode English, but discovered it was not her true calling. She took a break, but her love of horses never went away. Laure, Lexi’s mother, knew Lexi always wanted to branch out into the Western aspect of riding.

In 2014, Laure found Lizzy Horve for Lexi to begin taking lessons with. Shortly after they began their relationship, Laure & Lexi purchased Lexi’s first cow horse – RockNRevolution. Though he was a straight reiner, had no cow horse experience, and wasn’t too sure what a cow was – he was the gateway horse that allowed Lexi to embark on her cow horse journey.

In 2018, Oaks In Montana was purchased from Todd Crawford for Lexi. “Austin”was the first cow horse Lexi rode that made her truly understand the magic of riding a horse that hooked onto a cow. To this day, both RockNRevolution and Oaks In Montana remain with Laure & Lexi, and will forever be cherished.

In 2019, Truckin Chics Rule was purchased for Lexi and was the first horse to take Lexi to the winner’s circle, as well as the first horse she ever won a cow horse buckle on. “Blue Eye ” is still her main mount and favorite mare she rides.

Lexi says that once she found the cow horse, she felt like she had purpose; she felt accepted, like she belonged, and fell completely in love with it. Lexi owes her love of the sport to Lizzy Horve, and without her, she would not have developed into what she is today. Lexi has become a staple in the cow horse community and graces us at the major cow horse shows with her beautiful voice during the National Anthem every morning. Her light is contagious and she is adored by all in our community.

How Red Arrow Ranch Got Its Name

Founded With Extraordinary Horses In Mind

Red Arrow Ranch’s name was inspired by Laure’s horse, La Flecha; a chestnut mare who Laure purchased when she was in college and loved for 25 years until her passing.

La Flecha means “the arrow” in Spanish; thus, when coming up with a name for their new breeding business venture, “Red Arrow Ranch” felt like the perfect fit.
